  1. yup i’ve learnt it before when i was doing community work. my teacher got someone to come and teach us. i guess you can check out the courses at community centres or check the org in charge of sign language, cause there are sign language courses available. all the best, it’s pretty fun and helps you understand pple who cannot hear.

  2. Get in contact with any local, state or national societies for the deaf, as they should be able to either help you learn it, or at least put you in contact with somewhere where you could learn it.

I know some rudimentary sign language, and like first-aid training, you never know when you might need it.

  3. I do! Lots of people do, since lots of people have deaf family members.
There might be a school for the deaf in your neighborhood. At such a place, they would probably offer sign language classes. That’s how I started learning ASL, but I know most of it just from picking it up watching my family sign.
You can also take it at some colleges. If local colleges offer it, you could sign up for the class.
The most important thing about ASL is to practice it a lot. Because, like any other language, it needs practice for retention.

  4. Yes there are alot of hearing people that know sign language. 🙂 This includes hearing family members, friends, schoolmates, sign language interpreters, hearing teachers of the Deaf, etc.

Your best bet for learning would be:

    1. Take a sign language class (taught by a Deaf person, if possible!)
    2. Join the Deaf community, by attending Deaf events, going to Deaf clubs in your area, volunteering with work with Deaf elderly, etc.

You ALWAYS learn best if you are around it constantly.

Other options are using a sign language browser, such as, http://www.aslpro.com , http://www.lifeprint.com , etc

This should definitely get your started! Good luck! And thank you for your interest in our language!
