What is an alternate way of learning American Sign Language without taking a class?

I am a home schooler that would love to learn Sign Language as my foreign language. But the thing is I don’t have the money to spend on taking classes or hire a tutor to teach me. I have heard that learning from a book may not be correct.

May I ask for any recommended and successful computer software, DVD’s or whatever is the best way to learn sign language. Plus, where can I meet Deaf people so I may get involved with their colture.

  1. This site has free lessons. No account but the lesson plans are numbered from 1 through 45 and are very detailed. No videos, uses pictures. Really great site.

It looks like you have to register with them. There is a grammar section also.

I taught my infant daughter to sign by watching Signing Time videos. She signed her first signs when she was 5 months old. She is not deaf, it just made things easier than waiting for her to start talking.

And I always use this site with my daughter on my lap. We’ll go through the dictionary words. It’s really great.
