  1. You can try the source. You can order DVDs. You can learn from him. You both can have fun, even when both of you make mistakes.

  2. a fast way to be able to communicate with him is to learn the alphabet, with that you can spell any word

after that you can start learning general signs little by little even from him, it is faster to speak using general signs rather than spell every word but it will do for now.

    Here the alphabet:

    Good luck ^_^

  3. I think Andy who answered below overlooked the fact that the child is 4 years old and will not know how to spell. Using the manual alphabet he would have to know how to spell. You could try aslpro.com..There was a good program for families to learn sign together but I don’t know if it’s around any more. It was something like “The Bravo Family” . It had all these members of a family signing basic words and phrases. If he’s 4 and his mother is hearing, I highly doubt he knows much sign himself right now. Unless his mother is deaf and he was signed to from birth, his language is probably quite minimal right now. Your local library would probably have some sign language tapes too. I think it’s great that you want to communicate with him! I hope you’ll find a good resource for learning basic signs.

For reading sign, the other 1/2 of the struggle, just go to youtube and search for “asl” then, when you get through all of that, “sign language”. There are many deaf who vlog every day, so you can come back and get about 20 new deaf vlogs each and every day. It’s absolutely wonderful for learning, and learning the right way!
