What’s the name of the book you’re learning Sign Language from? Learning from a book is one way, but you could get an interactive CD and/or take ASL classes at a local community college.
You can buy the DVD or VHS called “Sign Language for Everyone– A basic course in Communication with the Deaf”
It’s by Dr. Cathy Rice and is the most complete video I’ve seen that teaches sign language. She visually teaches American Sign Language (ASL) and explains the meanings behind most of the signs which helps you remember the sign better.
I ordered it a while back and it’s really been helpful for me. I also attended a church with a sign language ministry and I would watch the interpreter. She invited me to sit up front with the deaf members and join in with “singing” (signing) the songs along with them.
I had a similar concern as yours. Books help but problem is you would not know how the sign is done exactly or properly so I suggest a DVD and you can watch it anytime you want.
The best way is to sign up for a course. A book can be good. A DVD would be better, but you won’t really learn sign until you use it with other people. If you’re in a class, you’ll have many opportunities to communicate with people, not just learn the signs.
Check out Michigan State University ASL Browser.
You can watch and learn sign language by watching a video on your computer.
(ASL means American Sign Language)
Book wont really help as sign language is a visual 3D moving language. There are so many resources out there but honestly the best way is to go to your local college and ask about classes they run. Good to start with Level 1.
The classes are often run by Deaf people so its their language. Also you get to meet other people to practise with in the class.
Fall in love with a Deaf person! ( no joke!)
But in the meantime, check into the central branch of the public- most have a special need section and might have DVD or videos to watch. Some are children tapes. These are good as they have kid stories. Some have a voice you can turn down so you can barely hear it when you watch it.
Look for another teacher. Check evening classes at a community college. Look for a Deaf club on-line.
Deaf “vlogs” are video blogs! google it.
Deaf camps- Lion’s Club or something like that. Local deaf elementary class may need volunteers
