  1. It takes several years to be able to learn enough signs to be able to communicate with the deaf, and if you want to learn ASL, that is even harder because it is very concept-based and very different from English. I took 2 years of classes and I can make myself understood by a deaf person on a simple rudimentary level, but it would be several more years until I would feel comfortable enough to carry on 2-sided conversation with a deaf individual. Go ahead and take classes though, it is a really wonderful language.

  2. umm… yeah, you can’t “speak” sign language. but you can learn to communicate using sign language.

it would probably take a couple of years to be fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) conversationally, but that’s with consistent practice… so your learning can’t be limited to going to classes alone – you need to socialize with the deaf community, go to signing dinners, etc. good luck!
