My 2 year old son’s speech therapist will be teaching him baby sign language. He’s not speaking at all yet. I was wondering if anyone has had this experience in teaching a child this and could share with me. I find it fascinating that a child can learn to speak using these signs and wonder possibly if there are any great sites or books out that someone could suggest or even some great tips for me. I found one site but it only has a few signs listed. Would anyone care to share? Thanks.

I have taught all of my kids some sign language. It comes in handy before they can talk. I usually start at about 8 months of age with the sign for milk before I nurse. I then incorporate the signs for please, thank you, more, sorry, mommy, daddy, and eat. I found a book with basic signs and used those.
I taught a class where one of the 18 month old children knew a few signs. It was great! There is a great set of videos my son (6) enjoys. We see them on TV, but here is the link
there are many dvds and books out there for baby sign language, and it works! my 2.5 year old niece started learning sign language around 10 months, and not only are her verbal skills mindblowing, but also when in doubt of if she wants more of something, i can sign it to her and she’ll answer. it is amazing. you also have to speak when you do the sign language so that both skills build. check your local library for more ideas.

(also, if this is a skill you keep training him in, it can help him later in life say, as a translator or something. you never know! kids at that age are sponges.)

YES!!!!!! I work with the two yr. olds in my daycare all the time. You are going to be shocked at how fast your son picks up this wonderful second language. I have found that a lot of my two’s who can’t speak clearly can often times get their point across using signs! Start with simple signs: Mommy, Daddy, more, yes, no, please, thank you, water, love, etc.

DH, search the web for your state’s School for the Deaf and Blind. I just did and your state sponsor’s a state system. They might be able to help you and may even have a program you can enter to get help. I looked at the Montana site and they have preschool help.
