I too recommend http://lifeprint.com
It is helpful.
I do recommend checking with the local college and seeing what can be done. Most colleges offer free grants and some will simply let you in. Also, you can sit in a Sign Language class free of charge (and receive no grade or credit for it) without paying in most cases. I recommend checking with your nearest community college. http://lifeprint.com can only cover so much and you need an actual teacher showing you the signs and telling you how to place signs.
I also recommend watching a few movies, which have American Sign Language in it.
1. Children of the Lesser God–With Deaf Actress Marlee Matlin
2. A Sweet Nothing In My Ear—Made 2008. Hallmark film. Marlee Matlin
3. The Quiet
4. Helen Keller
Watching movies, especially the first and second one will really get you started.
Use the website: http://commtechlab.msu.edu/sites/aslweb/browser.htm
To look up signs and have them signed visually.
