Okay, you see my cousin has a daughter who is two years old and wish to learn sign language along with her. I know quite a lot of words for sign languages and it’s ASL and all. I do not know what to start teaching her. All I could think of is start ABC SL and then some basic stuff like bathroom, drink, baby (she has a baby sister who was just born), food, milk, water, and bed. I’m not sure what else to share.
If you have an idea what else, please suggests, I’m not even sure how to teach ASL before. I mean, I am a student teacher at BOCES for Early Childhood Education, but only average children (meaning no disabilities).
Plus, I am deaf (serve to profound who wears digital hearing aids) and I have known ASL since I was somewhere around 4 to 5 years old. So, I know half of the stuff and all. So, please sure.
.
It sounds like you’re doing the right thing. Starting off by teaching her the ABC’s is the best thing to do. Teach her all the basic stuff, like counting, how to ask where something is, and other things like that. Then, see what she wants to learn and go from there.
If she is two and you can use ASL fluently then you should just sign as you speak as much as possible. food words and more and up and no and yes and please are good. ABC and counting might be more boring to her. Try to sing and sign at the same time. or play with a farm toy and sign the animals. Things like that . 2yos will learn more if they are using it.
