I’ve already learned ASL-american sign language
and english (native tongue)
i was thinking about latin…
but it sounds a little confusing -what are some languages that are pretty easy to learn that will help me learn latin?
ex. if you speak spanish then you can sort of communicate with someone who knows italian since some of the words are the same.
what are some languages that i can learn that are similar to latin?
.
Italian.
If you are in the US definitely Spanish.
If you are in the UK or somewhere else Portuguese or Italian.
You want it to have similarities to Latin and to be useful as well.
latin isnt a spoken language its one thats typically only read so theres not much i can really say to help you with that one but spanish opens SO many doors not only could you speak and understand spanish you would also be able to speak/understand italian, portuguese and even some french is very similar to spanish
SPANISH is the easiest Romance Language for me
Romance Languages are languages that derive from Latin, therefore it’s greatly related to Latin:
Spanish
French
Portuguese
Italian
Catalán
Romanian
*Some people call an English a Romance Language (although it’s very distant in relation)*
*And many other regional languages of Spain, France and Italy.*
I was going to tell you to take ASL but, your ahead of the game. I love that language =]
Is Cuban latin? I’m not sure. But, that would be cool.
Portuguese all the way!
You could learn Spanish, French or Italian (in order of difficulty – Italian being the toughest. Why not try something totally different like Russian, Japanese or Arabic, if you are good with languages?
LATIN, is the best overall language to learn. Many European language have extensive Latin derivatives.
From that you can choose the one that FITS!
ONE alternative is to go to your library and check out language tapes of CD’s, ONE AT A TIME, and then pick the one that seems Most Comfortable to you!
Thanks, RR
any of the romance languages would help, as they are descended from latin. these are spanish, french, italian, portugese, and romanian
Portuguese, Spanish, and Italian are the most similar Romance languages. French is slightly less useful than Spanish, which is indubitably the most popular (dubbed the easiest to learn) Romance language. However, if you have yet to take the SAT or a similar test which analyzes your knowledge of English, you may want to learn Latin, which will substantially increase your understanding of the English language.
latin/spanish will be easier than japanese or chinese to learn… go for it.
Well I would have to say either Spanish or Italian. Spanish is very simple in its pronunciation and sentence structure. Italian is only slightly harder. Although Latin might be helpful in certain instances it’s not a language the you will be able to practice by talking to native speakers. If you plan to you learn a language in order to interact with others I would say 1. spanish 2. italian.
Right now I’m learning Portuguese and think that this is an amazing language. Spanish is so common now as far as number of learners but now many can say that they are fluent in Portuguese.
Good Luck on your decision
hey! I speak well Romanian&Italian . I’m studying now Spanish and I understand French….i think that if you really want to study a language that’s similar to Latin learn Spanish because it’s one of the most spoken languages after English ,Chinese…and Hindi(India)…
After learning Spanish you could easily learn Italian too because there are many similaritys between this 2 languages. the only reason that makes me suggest you to learn Spanish first is because it’s more popular
French is popular too but is not so similar to Spanish and Italian…
in my opinion Romanian is the language which is more similar to Latin…it’s a nice language(I love it!) but it’s used only in Romania so….
about Latin…I don’t know what to say..it is an important language but almost no one uses it anymore…maybe you should learn some language that helps you comunicating with many people..but if you really want to study it that’s just admirable!!
about other kinds of languages…what do you say about Chinese – the “future ‘lingua franca’ of the world” ? it’s interesting(I’m studying it too) but…complicated…(at least at first….)
if you really can’t choose… close your eyes, put your finger on one map and learn the language that’s spoken in the place that your finger indicates!! ….joke!!:))
bye bye!
How about a language that can help you learn other languages?
Esperanto!
Stay with me here because it’s quite long but worth it.
Believe it or not, Esperanto represents the best chance for the survival of the multitude of dying languages since it’s purpose is to provide an alternative to any one National tongue to the disadvantage of others.
Consider if you will, Esperanto is an easily learnt AUXILIARY language. This means that myself and that German, Japanese or Korean fellow over there needn’t sink a lot of time and effort into learning each others mother tongues if they don’t wish, where whose ever tongue we settle to communicate in will hold the advantage in any discussions; since the likelihood of having a mastery of the second language will be remote at best. Each partner has exerted a similar effort in order to communicate; a linguisticly neutral hand shake if you will. Yet we are still free to talk in our mother tongues when and where we choose.
Further, I am now in a position to visit just about every country in the world and with the help of my new found Esperanto speaking friend (2 million plus) learn of his / her culture and language. This second facet is possible because in learning Esperanto I now have a firmer grip on linguistic principles. I will provide a link below on the benefits of learning tertiary languages after Esperanto.
I frequently make this claim, and I live by it…
“If you can’t learn Esperanto, you can’t learn ANY language.”
However, if it is Culture you desire, then you’ve no need to look much further than the Internet. In music there are Folk, Jazz, Opera, Rock, Hip Hop, Rap, childrens’ songs, etc. In literature there is multinational translations plus original works. The yearly Esperanto Congresses are a play ground for young and old alike for interaction.
There are many people who have a negative image of Esperanto because they assume that it intended as the SOLE world language, which is as far from the truth as you can get.
Nobody would feel forced to learn it, especially if they’ve no desire to leave their comfort zone.
The fact is that it’s use is expanding exponentially thanks to the Internet. The last educated guess puts the number of functionally fluent speakers at 2 million plus and another 2,000 native speakers (those that were born to an Esperanto household; yes they exist).
Esperanto is simply a tool to allow those that might otherwise struggle to learn a new language, the option of expanding their horizons.
Finally, there is currently $600 million plus a year being spent on translation services at the UN, and a similar amount in the EU, because no one nationality wants to loose the prestige of owning one of the ‘working’ languages in each of those institutions. This a huge waste of resources that might otherwise go to feeding and housing those less fortunate. A single working language, easily learnt (less than a year to become fluent) would certainly go along way towards that goal. The Universal Esperanto Asociation (UEA) currently holds observer status (class B) at the UN and UNESCO. So there is some movement towards this goal.
Research and draw your own conclusions.
Ĝis!
portuguese, spanish, italian or french
swahili
I’d say learn Spanish, i’m learning it as a third language , and so far it’s not too hard!
Languages similar to Latin: Italian, French, Romanian (by the way, it is spoken not only in Romania, but also in Moldova and countries with Romanian minority like Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece, Spain etc.), Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Occitane.
I think the best thing to do is to learn not one, but several languages belonging to different families – A Romance one and a Slavic one for example – it will help you understand a few others!! at no cost. Try to find out what job, economic and cultural oportunities you have in your area and make a choice.
