Teaching sign language to a 14 month old?

My wife has been teaching my son sign language and he has caught on pretty quick. But, I am concerned since he is learning sign language will this have some type of affect on his speech abilities? Because he can talk(or babble) normal. My wife is just teaching him sign language because she says this will make him smarter.

  1. sign language for kids helps them associate words and actions… they learn to comunicate faster and have a larger vocabulary… stick with it… it worked wonders for my child… stopped the terrible twos… 😉

  2. I think you should talk to someone who knows more about this situation. Maybe a counselor or someone who has experience with children.

  3. NO it will not affect him in any negative way…he will be able to let his needs be known sooner and trust me that is nice all the way around. we taught our daughter simple signs and she was happier because she could tell me what she needed and she talks great!!

  4. sign language is a great way for her to communicate with her little son. Let her do it.
There is nothing harmful of what she is doing- I actually applaud her for giving her son so much time and effort- she wants to make sure she is giving your son everything he needs and by him telling her.
He will talk when he is good and ready- and it will not effect the timing of him learning to talk.

Don’t worry- know it does make him smarter and will improve their communication.
You should get involved so you don’t feel left out either.

  5. Hi,

    He’ll be fine!

I’m just in the early stages of teaching my son Josh some baby sign language but I’m impressed with what he has learnt very quickly and how useful and reassuring it is for me and my husband to know what he is thinking.

It’s absolutely amazing to see that now, instead of just crying when he is hungry, he will make the sign for ‘food’ so we know exactly what he wants. He can also give the sign for ‘more’and is starting to use the sign for ‘drink’. And all of this is in just a few weeks!

We also like the fact that learning baby sign language apparently leads to children having a higher IQ, having better self esteem and being able to learn faster as they get older.

I am using a baby signing course I found online which includes ebooks, audio and videos. The videos have been particularly useful because I get to actually see exactly how each sign should be done and how it should be taught to Josh. The course is at http://www.easybabysignlanguage.com if you’d like to take a look.

Baby sign language does take a bit of effort, but it’s very rewarding and reassuring so I can fully recommend you give it a try.

    Ally
