  1. That sounds like it would be a fun club. It reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite when he was in the Happy Hands Club, lol.

Here are some steps you should take:

one: Check with the principal’s office to make sure the club or team you want to start doesn’t already exist or if it existed in the past. If it did exist you might be able to find out why it ended.

two: If it doesn’t, find out your school’s requirements for setting up a new club. Most schools are very welcoming to clubs so the process should not be too hard.

three (you’ve already done this): Get a sponsor for your group. In certain instances the sponsor can either attract or repel possible members so be mindful of who you choose to sponsor your club.

four: Recruit club members. Get permission to post notices announcing your new club around campus, and include a contact person for interested students. You could ask some of your friends to join, and ask them to tell thier friends, and so on and so forth. I was in A LOT of clubs in HS, and I found that if you have food at meetings, more people come!

five: Schedule an inaugural meeting to discuss what activities your club will pursue. Use this time to try to focus on a direction of the club so that no one is getting into something they did not plan for.

six: Set up a structure for your club. Elect officers and decide who will be responsible for what. If you are collecting funds you may want to have more than one treasurer so that they can oversee each other’s work. It may not be a good idea to place all the funds in the hands of one person.

Some things that your club could do:

    – You could have 2 meetings a month, The first one in each month could be one where you all learn new signs and whatnot. The sponsor could teach them or you guys could find a website and practice them from there. The second one, you could have a guest speaker, or your club can work on a community service project to help out local deaf children. Like a fundraiser for a deaf school, or some fun gathering for younger deaf children.

-It would be easier if you had a different theme each month. Like September you all could learn basic signs like ABC’s, numbers, Greetings and needs. etc…

-Look online and see if other school have clubs similar to what you want to start. See what the have done and if you want to use some of their ideas.

Have Fun. Clubs are easy to start but hard to maintain. Most clubs do not succeed because they are disorganized. If you plan on having a meeting every other tuesday, then do it. But don’t change the schedule at the last meeting, people do not like that. Good Luck!
