Sign Language history recources.(Deaf people)?

I am learning sign language in college. I have found some good recources already but would like the best ones and preferably from the most knowledgable.
i.e.(don’t go online and type in sign language and post it here, I know how to do that).
I must write a resaerch paper outlining ten points. I am particularly interested in the history of ASL, the linguistics (how the sign developed), and when sign language was illegal.

  1. I would check out the work of Byron Bridges. He’s a Deaf linguist and lecturer. You might find some interesting information in the work of William Stokoe who was a linguist who first determined that ASL is a full and complete language. As far as the last one, I’m not sure of a good source, but just FYI, sign language was never illegal. From about the time of the Milan Conference in 1880 (?) through the 1960’s, most schools in the US and Europe adopted the Oral Method which forbade the use of sign language in most schools. There have always been, however, residential schools for the Deaf who did not forbid the use of sign language, and vocational programs which used sign.
