Does a deaf person have to give you a sign name?

My friends and I are learning sign language, & I’d like to not have to spell everyone name out… a couple have them have really long names! I’ve read on other sites that you can give it to yourself, but others say a deaf or hard of hearing person must give it to you. Is this true?

  1. That you can give what to yourself?

Well, write their names down for christ sake, I even think that’s what they do most of the time. Can’t be THAT long, at least not their first name.

  2. It doesn’t HAVE to be given to you by a Deaf person, but that’s definitely recommended.

There are a lot of grammatical rules that guide the creation of a sign name, and most hearing people break those rules without knowing it. If you create the wrong sign name, as soon as you introduce yourself to people they’ll know you’re hearing. Not that that’s always a bad thing.

You can always make one up and just use it until a Deaf person assigns one to you. Or, ask a Deaf person to give one to you.
