I need a book/movie/short story/documentary or any form of literature that centers on the topic of language learning/language acquisition/second language learning. Like, Hellen Keller’s language acquisition in her autobiography (unfortunately, her language learning wasn’t mentioned much, so I can’t use that). I need this as a related literature for my analytical paper about language learning strategies…
HELP! Isn’t there a movie of some sort that has an “I want to learn that foreign language!” dilemma? or “I’m handicapped but I was able to learn sign language” drama? or anything similar to that??
.
I think David Sedaris’ book “Me Talk Pretty One Day” references his moving to Paris and struggles to learn to speak French properly. You could try that.
The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordon.
It’s the story of a profoundly deaf boy and a recently widowed girl who slowly find ways to communicate. There are some more adult themes (rape), but it’s a very powerful, wonderfully written book about communication.
The H* Y* M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N stories by Leo Rosten (written under the name Leonard Q. Ross) were written in the New Yorker and were the published in two books. Classics on the subject and very funny.
I have a real interest myself in language acquisition and know there must be some films out there! Did some research:
This one will make you laugh- but Megatron in transformers!
