Go to a library or bookstore and check out/buy books on the subject. That way you can teach yourself at your own pace (unlike in a formal class). Be sure to try to find groups of people (usually deaf people) that meet to chat. I know there are some in my area that meet at a Starbucks once a week. Good luck!
spend time with someone familiar with sign language, or go on youtube they have sign language lessons ^^
meet some Deaf people, get some books, go to a Deaf church, take some classes.
The best way, of course, would be in a formal class. You would also be really surprised how much you can learn in your first ASL class. I was able to have full blown conversations after my first class.
If a semester is too long for you, though, I recommend buying the Signing Naturally series (1, 2, & 3). They are books with video tapes. Those are the books that the community college near me uses for their ASL classes. They are great.
You can also take online classes. You can take these ones, but they are not free:

Here are some free lessons, but they don’t have videos:

I offer free online video ASL classes on my website:

And it doesn’t matter which way you learn, but attending Deaf events will always help you learn faster. Conversing with deaf people is by far the fastest way to learn ASL. You can look for Deaf events in your area on this website:
