This is such a great impromptu idea. Of course it depended quite a bit on the signer but that was part of the risk Birbiglia took, and so the genius. Of course I’m sure he’s a good judge of people as well, and this woman was perfect.
no prep time was likely best. great stuff!
Hey, my friend Dave married on deafmatching. He is very excellent. Meet deaf singles pls check

I second that! I think a little blurb in the info box about the fact that she’s not really acting as an interpreter for anyone would make it a lot less confusing.
That was the hottest interpreter ever.
“What was Fuck em again?” BAHAHA
I am glad I read the comments, because I was watching this with the sound off and getting really mad at the interpreter. There were a lot of times where she was laughing with the comedian, but NOT interpreting what the two of them said. So, now that I know it was unplanned and there were no deaf people there, that’s better. 🙂 It reminds me to interpret EVERYTHING when I am in a similar situation.
This is just so funny! I have watched it numerous times. They are both just perfect. Tina reminds me of my sister in law.
seriously, kudos to your wife, that was amazingly funny. i’ve seen this bit before on comedy central and i laughed, but seeing it again with Tina was so funny.
I think mike did a very good job playing off of her and vice versa. i have heard this story before but having the signing made the show more organic and i found myself laughing as if i was just hearing it again.
This is awesome… as a child of deaf parents, I know that deaf people would love the interaction between Mike and the Interpreter…
Also, assuming from your wife’s skill level she’s an interpreter or educator by day. You go girl! That would’ve been fun…I love Birbiglia
Oh my! Your wife was a good sport! Yeah, ya never know when you’ll end up on youtube and have people spouting their half-assed assessments of you – like I did 9 months ago.
As an interpreter, I gotta say I wld hate to try my hands at comedy!!
So, does your wife have any Birbiglia stories? That would be a fun post 🙂
ha ha ha
Well, she was brilliant! Knowing that she was a friend makes his teasing less douchy. I thought he was performing at another charity and making similar faux pases as his joke.
This is my wife, I just wanted to clarify, she was working at the club as a waitress and was pulled on stage by Mike and asked to interpret for him. There were no deaf people in the audience, and there was no prep time either. She also was not aware that there was a taping or that it would end up on youtube. She is just a friend of Mike’s and he thought it would be funny to do this with her.

read what RachelQZ said up above. i know she is not signing everything.
that’s what i am talking about. she was not signing all the time everything that he said. thank you for posting this comment. 🙂
oh well i tried to answer b4 watching the movie but um yeah this one time at this 1 place this one lady was signing faster then the guy was talking but only because the guy was studdering so some times she would just sit un till he said something she hasnt already sighned yet
wtf
there is no story. when he is talking directly to her she does not sign. there is no story about it, and if she were to sign faster then him speaking that would be wrong for an interpretor. they usually sign behind, sometimes on time with but never, NEVER, faster then the speaker.
