@winteribis Thanks so much for saying so! I’m so glad you are continuing to sign with your daughter. My daughter was the same, she could speak really early but loved to sign. She is now four and a half and loves to sign still.
I have loved your sign language videos for the last 18 months or so. My daughter is now 24 months old and even though she is now quite verbal, we keep learning new signs all the time because she LIKES it. And she loves to watch your daughter sign! Thanks so much for these!
i you mommy
I’d use BSL if you are from the UK. There are a fair amount of BSL resources and classes that offer that. ASL and BSL are pretty different.
🙂
how much does american sign language differ to british ? and is it best to try and incorporate the both….im from the u.k. and learning for my daughter.
In a nice way I’d like to say. Please don’t waste time making up fake signs. If your gonna sign, go ahead and learn the real sign. It’s so simple! And the sign is an actual real sign that maybe your child can use one day for someone who is deaf! And you can look up any word online or in books! My husband asked today, whats the sign for sorry, I had his answer withing 10 seconds! It’s fun, and very rewarding! Give it a try 🙂
I’d like to say that I am new to this, but love it! My son is 19 m old, I thought it might be too late. But he throws a lot of tantrums, and I felt he was never actually listening to me, and I wasn’t able to communicate well with him. I started signing, and he actually stopped the fits and started watching me. I feel I have hit a breakthrough and can communicate with him now. And in a neat way, it’s a very special moment with him. It’s a great way to bond. My next child I will start right away!
I imagine it would have the same outcome as long as you are consistent but why would you want to make up fake signs when you can teaching them a real language? Plus, you can easily look up ASL signs for something if you forget how to do them.
That’s really great! I’d like to know if we can use a non official sign language, like one invented by ourselves to talk to our babies. Does it have the same effect as an official sign language like ASL?
hi smarthandsCA my name is jenny and i went to the lesson and it was great and cute baby
There are tons of advantages to teaching babies sign language. The number one advantage is that it can reduce their frustration because they are able to communicate their needs to you before they can talk. There are several other advantages to signing with babies. If you’d like more information on it I can send you some research etc. Just send me an email.
hi
it was intesting.but i want to know what is advantage of teaching sign language to the babes?
my daughter is 13 months old and is already signing about 7 words…it is a complete blessing for her to be able to communicate with us without crying or whining and everybody gets frustrated…i am going to make the flash cards for her since she is doing so well and i hope she ends up as good as Fireese!
Hi there!! I’m from rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
I fell in love with your first video when I watched it more then 1 year ago… 🙂 It was the first time I saw the method of signing with babys, I think it is incredible! I showed it to my husband and he loved it too! I always come here to watch it again… And now I saw that you have all these other amazing vids and your little girl looks so so cute growing up!
I don’t have a baby yet, but we are plannig to get pregnant next year. (…)
Hi Idah,
No, it’s not too late! Fireese is now almost three and she still loves using sign language. It’s really fun for children and it helps their receptive skills. This is because we take in language on the left side of our brain as a sound and we take in sign language on the right side of our brain as an image. So using sign language uses both sides of the brain 🙂
I used it with my grade 8 students and they loved it! I highly recommend teaching kids the ASL alphabet also!
Hi Laura! My name is Idah and Im from Singapore. This is my very first time watching your video on how to teach kids recognise words by using sign language. Its really a brilliant idea and my question is that my youngest child is 3 yrs and I would like to know whether is it too late for me to teach him by using this method of yours? I will try to go the website that you recommended and print the flashcard and will give it a try on him.. Who knows it might work!! Thanks!
Flashcards don’t have to be used in a ‘traditional’ sense. We printed them off and let her play with them and look at them. We never held them up and quizzed her with them. If she was interested in one we would show her the sign but we let her guide the way she used them, just like flipping through the book. The vocab is simple for babies and the signs on the back are for parents. It took me a long time to make the files to share with other parents who were asking for them & wanted them.
Cute flashcards, but I’m honestly not sure who these are intended for: parents? babies?
The vocabulary words are extremely basic – perhaps for an older toddler they could act as a bridge between signing and reading, but I’m leery of waving flashcards in front of my kids.
Still, maybe I’ll print them off while they’re free and give it a try! 🙂
Wow, great idea !
