My friend lives in a deaf household, and would like to go to college near home, which is Florida. He wants to become an interpreter and a business lawyer. He already knows Sign Language, his mother uses PSE, while the other family members use ASL. I would like to help him find some information on which colleges near here would be good options for him. I’ve heard Stetson University was good. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I would recommend attending a regular college majoring in political science or liberal arts (For his Law major) The asl is not a very difficult thing to achieve at all. Sadly interpreters are becoming less and less and therefore corporations are lowering the requirements that must be achieved. My friend is an ASL interpreter here in California and he doesn’t have a degree. He simply took ASL classes at his college that he attended. Your friend can easily take simple ASL classes and become fluent and that is all that is really needed to become and intrepreter. In addition, having a degree in ASl is more for teaching than becoming and intepreter. Much like if you were a business major and took 4 years of spanish. You would be hired not because you have a degree in spanish, but more because you simply took the classes and are fluent. hope this helps and good luck.
