Plus, when Melissa says things like, “dirty is sort of signifying crumbs are falling off your face” that is total b***s*** that she made up on the spot, and it irks me that she is spreading misinformation like that.
Getting to know Deaf people and learning partly from signing with them is a MUCH better idea than trying to learn from Melissa. However, it’s much better to get a solid basis in the language itself so that you have something you can build on when learning new signs or learning new ways of expressing concepts. Begin with learning from a qualified ASL teacher.
No, actually, you learn your native language not as individual words, but in context (sentences), ie. using the grammar of that language. If a Deaf person has to struggle to grasp your meaning because you don’t know grammar, is that bridging the communication gap? No it isn’t.
i do agree Banerika that sign has its own grammer rules but jus as you learned english you learned word first then grammer came later for what is grammer it you dont know the word to form the sentence. and just like an asian who just learnred to speak english can get their basic point across. so it is with sign. i may not know how to sign correctly but if a deaf person knows the context you conversation is in then they can put two and two together.
the way i look at it, is its a little bit is better than none at all. i also learned spanish from cooks in a kitchen, and if i said something wrong, they wouldnt laugh at me and look at me like i was a dumb ass, they would help. im sure ASL is the same and if i signed something improperly to a deaf person they would be understanding and appreciative of the fact i was trying. so stop knockin the website and watch something else.
your discription is wrong
This is not hatred: it’s information given to save others the trouble to learning a language the wrong way from someone not qualified to teach it. That’s all.
Ha! I’m not Mormon! I’m also not an ASL teacher, so I won’t be posting any videos, thanks. : )
@Banerika let me guess you know an out of work sign teacher.
give it up and start loving not hating.
Banerika, you’re a bitter mormon. Who cares if she doesn’t teach grammar. Clearly the intention here is to educate generally and not comprehensively. Also, I don’t think she calls herself an expert either, so you are mistaken. BTW, no one is going to your BYU site. Instead of bashing her, why not start your own signing videos and show her up instead of complaining about the good she is doing.
It’s a waste of time to go through each video of hers and point out every mistake she makes. Even if every sign she made was performed correctly, there is still the matter of grammar, and of conceptual accuracy, neither of which she teaches. ASL is not a manual representation of English, it is its own language. If you learn individual signs only (vocabulary) then you still can’t converse with a Deaf person. So find an ASL TEACHER to learn from. Not someone only calling themselves an expert.
well if u know shes rong why dont u say how its suppose to be done….
Yes she rocks!
uhm yeah this isnt food and beverages like the name and description says!!
i thought her clean was the way 2 do nice???
I am a professional interpreter, married to a Deaf person, this woman does not sign accurately or well to match American Sign Language in the Pacific NW, New Mexico, California, Chicago, Washington DC, or South Florida (all places I have lived or worked with the Deaf community). I wish she said WHICH sign language she was teaching – I suspect she is Canadian by accent also.
You might “love” this teacher, but unfortunately, what she is teaching is incorrect and she has no qualifications to teach sign language. No, the sign for dirty has nothing to do with “signifying that crumbs are falling on your face.” She is a flat out fraud. Learn from her, you learn it wrong. If you really want to learn ASL, check out BYUFanatic on YouTube.
i love this teacher rock on
Hahaha,
I love how they say its about food in the description, but the vidoes about the bathroom. XD
what do you mean?
This is not BSL! Should be in description as people will be watching these thinking they are learning BSL when they are actually learning another form.
i like this, you go at just the right speed and you repepat it several times.
the way she says sorry in the other videos, I’m guessing she’s canadian
england
yes, there are many forms of sign language and you can tell in one of their vid’s, she says sorry with the accent. lol just like me i can never hide it when i say sorry. where in the UK are you?
