I think it would be best to have some sort of visual aid while you’re learning… I would try going to youtube and trying to look up some instructional videos. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=learn+sign+language&search_type=&aq=f
I always use sign language and writing by conversation then my family learns to use fingerspelling for me.
On-line you can find some basic vocab or phrases.
For example at http://www.aslpro.com
There are many visual tools such as DVDs or ASL dictionaries that can be handy too.
Also, you are going to need a way to put that vocab together in a proper structure. For learning the grammar you can join a Deaf club or take an ASL course at some Community College.
