You can look into the local community college for classes to take, or even the local recreational classes for Adult Education (sometimes they allow you to take these classes even if you’re still only in High School) So there’s an opportunity out there to learn a fabulous skill. It’s very commendable that you want to learn. Think of it as learning to speak a foreign language.
Check out classes at your local community college. They should offer some courses in ASL. I am probably going to start my first semester in the spring.
I am beginning a course in sign lang in 2 week’s time through something called Volkshochschule (basically adult education) in Germany.
Check out adult education courses in your community or see what colleges have on offer.
That is, deaf people. People is not plural!

The best way to learn ASL is not a classroom.
Constant socializing with deaf people is key.
Immersion and practice will develop your ASL much faster than any conventional classroom because a classroom encourages memorizing whereas a social situation will be less critical of mistakes and the deaf would correct you, teach you, and move on.
Similar to how the best way to learn a new language is to move to France or Germany or whatever and force yourself to learn it.

Local community colleges, schools for the Deaf, etc often offer classes. However, sometimes that’s not enough. Getting out there and using ASL is probably the most important part.
You can also find some pretty good books and DVDs, however that is fairly limiting. Make sure that it is actually ASL rather then Signed English or some other variation.
That’s great! The best way to learn is by taking classes, like others have suggested. Also there is a video series, though it may seem to be aimed at kids, is very helpful. These videos are how I learned quite a bit. Here’s the URL to their website:
