Make a new friend who’s deaf.
The best way to learn ASL (like in any other language) is to be immersed in the culture and being around people who speak it as their mother tongue. In the case of ASL, those people are the Deaf, that grew up speaking it and know better than anybody else the grammar and vocab.
You can join a Deaf club or even when you reach the age to do it, take some ASL course in a Community College.
Reading books, dictionaries, watching videos in ASL is going to help you a lot with new vocab. After that, practice, practice and practice.
Learn the basics, and not just the signs. There is so much more to signing than to your hands. You have to have good facial expressions and know the positions of the signs. a good site to look up most any signs is lifeprint.com and then click on one of the letters at the top according to the sign you want to know. Another way is a book. I got mine at Barne’s and Noble. It’s called “Signing Illustrated” by Mickey Flodin. This is a FANTASTIC book because it is pretty much like a class. It has sections and quizzes for you to do.
OH, and watch other people. This helps SOO much. Youtube will do it.
