In American Sign Language, does it matter which hand you use to sign?

I am right handed but I found I’ve been using my left hand for signing the alphabet. I was just wondering if there’s a certain hand you suppose to use for certain words or phrases. This is my first time learning sign language so I don’t know much. Any other tips would be nice.

  1. It doesn’t, but most people use their dominant hand to make the majority of the signs (including fingerspelling). It will be understandable whichever hand you use as your dominant hand, but be consistent… if you are going to use your left to fingerspell (which I don’t recommend if you’re right-handed), then use it for most of the signs.)
