I need to take 2 years of a language in college.
I tried spanish in high school, but I didn’t pick it up at all. I had a very hard time learning it. I had my worst grades in spanish.
Now I need to take a foreign language in college.
Which should I take? Should I take spanish again (which I know will be hard for me)? or should I try sign language?
.
I would take sign language..Not only because you have already taken spanish (and you know its hard) but because sign language is more important….good luck
sign language would help because most people do not understand it. what area do you live in? Spanish is practical here-but I had a hard time with it. I have seen sign language on television when it is used to interpret a play or scenario-bottom right corner. If it counts as a “language” for credit-go for it.
try something new so yea try sign language.
If you faliled at spanish, that tell me you cant grasp the foreign concepts so you should go with American sign language. And note that if you go to Europe they might not use our sign language. And ASL would be easeir for you since there is jsut a motion per word in english. Its not like in spanish they have two words for for and be (para & por, ser and estar) If you want to say. All the vocab is that same even if they have different meanings.
ASL sign all the way, spanish is good yes, but you may not need/use spanish but you will always know sign
I’ve learned and use both. Take the one that you may be able to use in the future.
ASL is the accepted form of sign language in most of the USA. There are other forms of communication with the deaf but the vast majority of Hearing Impaired know and use it.
It is loaded visual cues that may be easier for you to learn. Syntax differences may foil you a little.
ASL is conceptual. Foreign languages are grammatical. If you find it easier to think in concept, then go for ASL.
I took spanish in high school as well, and did 2 years of asl in college. I did not do horribly in spanish, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it.
I would recommend to any body to take sign language. It was so interesting and for me it was easy to learn. With all of the people that were in my classes only a few had a really hard time picking the signs up. I enjoyed taking sign language over spanish ten times over! If you take it, and find that you don’t like it, go for spanish.
I would suggest taking ASL (American Sign Language). It is not easy but ASL is a visual language, and if you feel you are a visual learner it will be a perfect fit for you. I took French in high school and was told by my French teacher that I would never amount to anything. She didn’t like me because I didn’t receive good grades in her class. I then started taking ASL and picked it up very quickly. I now am a ASL professor and certified interpreter.
Let me just clarify ASL is not easy but it can be rewarding if you put some time and effort into it. If you are a visual learner you will pick it up very quickly. Then you need to learn how to use the signs you learn and put them into the language ASL. From what you have mentioned in your question ASL will be easier for you and you can have a lot of success with it. Just don’t expect it to be too easy. Good luck!
I know some times is tough to start with a foreign language , but once you learn the first language it will give you a ability to learn others.
I’ll go with Spanish , give it a chance.
