There may be different answers to this question. It depends if you are a freelance or community interpreter or an educational interpreter. I have worked in both fields. Currently I work in K-12 setting. I like my job because it is steady and I know how much I will make every week. i also get holidays off and summer and spring break. Since I work in an educational setting I do more than interpret sign language. I work as an aide in the classroom and help the teacher with day-to-day activities.
Other things that are helpful is to just have a broad background. When you interpret it is very helpful to have an understanding of a lot of subjects and different areas. It is hard to interpret a concept that you do not understand.
