there are some differences in the alphabet and different symbols, but for the most part it is easy to see what each sign means
Well, Cantonese sign language is different from ASL. I didn’t learn much, but we of course had to use Chinese grammar when signing, not English grammar. I believe there were a number of words that were shared or borrowed, but I think not enough to make them compatible.
Sign languages are just as different as spoken ones are.
A person who signs in American Sign Language, or ASL, cannot communicate with a person who signs in French Sign Language, and vice versa.
Oh, for the curious– ASL is a language unto itself and does not follow English grammatical rules. When English grammar and vocabulary are used, it’s called “Signed Exact English” or SSE.
