Is sign language considered to be a second language?

I am teaching myself sign language and I think I am going to end up going to Rock Valley Community College and then I am going to go to a college for a criminal justice and human services masters degree. But.. I don’t know if sign language is considered as a second language to community colleges or colleges like Columbia or Upper Iowa Unniversity. Can any one help me out here??
I already planned on taking courses once I get into my community college if they have it there.

  1. Yes. And if I remember correctly is the recommended second language for teachers.

    Thanks

  2. ASL definitely is.
You might want to consider taking classes. Looking at books is a hard way to learn the signs and you won’t pick up the natural rhythm. If you know any deaf people, talking to them is the best way to learn. My aunt and cousin are deaf, though my aunt can communicate in English, and watching them is the way that I learned most of my ASL. I’ve found that it’s a far more natural way to learn a language than the ASL classes I took.

  3. Yes, American Sign Language is officially recognized as a foreign language. It has different structure, idioms and a separate community that utilizes the language. Weather or not your colleges recognize that, is a completely different story, you do however have grounds on which to fight it if you wish to use it as a second language instead of an elective since the USA has deemed it a second language.
