I wanted to teach my son sign language just because I think it would be neat to do and I have the time to do it but he is only 4 months, how old should babies be before you start teaching them? Has anyone done it and have any comments on it? What dvd did you use? Thanks!

I’ve read it’s never too early to start!
I plan to start teaching my son immediately. We’re going to start with “mommy”, “daddy”, “baby”, “diaper”, and “I love you”
A few months later we’ll start adding in “hungry”, “more”, etc.
I started signing very basic signs to my daughter from the time she was a month old. I sign the word “more” to her when she was done nursing on one side and I would switch her to the other. When she was about 6-7 months old she would sign more and all done to me. But after that she started talking and we didn’t have a use for signs anymore! Now at 22 months she nows about 10 signs all together but can tell you in detail what she wants so there really is no purpose for them.
It is never too early to start. I am fluent in american sign language and ave used it with all of the children in my daycare and will be using it with my son when he is born. At 16 months my niece was communicating very well with sign language.
Just make sure if you are doing it with a hearing child that you are speaking and signing at the same time (sign english) so that their brain is connecting the two.
I started teaching my grandson sign language at six months. As a sign language interpreter, I did not use tapes of any kind. I started with object and sign such as the sign for milk when I gave him his bottle. Please don’t do this because it would be “neat”. This is a language belonging to a culture and not something for amusement. It seems like you are bored and looking for something to do with your son. Please look for something else to do such as join a mommy and baby group. I involved my grandson in sign language because I was working with deaf children and he would be socializing with the children and I wanted him to be able to communicate with the other children.
