Which sign language should I learn?

I live in Australia but I was wondering if I should learn the Australian or American sign language…
Is sign language hard to learn?
Which sign language is most common?
I know there are a lot more sign languages and I decided either Australian or American…
I was also thinking of learning both, but that’s like two more languages… (Hungarian is my first language and English is my second and I’m learning Japanese at school… I love learning languages…)

So what do you think?

  1. Well Australia’s sign language is called Auslan. I learn Auslan. It’s fairly easy.

Also why would you want to learn American? Hearing impaired people in Australia don’t learn the American, they learn Auslan.

Also American sign language you use one hand for the alphabet, which is hard. Australian you use two, easier.

Anyway, wrapping it up, I do Auslan.
No language is easy at all, it takes heaps and heaps of practice.
But you’re best off learning AUSLAN (the Australian) because that’s what most(all?) Australian deaf and hearing impaired people use.

  2. Well, I am going to assume you live in Australia. I would say learn Auslan. You will likely have a hard time finding native signers to practice American Sign Language (ASL) with, and signing with native signers is the fastest way to learn.
On a side note, I find it interesting that some one finds the one handed alphabet of ASL difficult. I’m an American and 2nd semester ASL student, and I couldn’t imagine using 2 hands to spell a word. I would find that cumbersome. I guess it’s all in what you learn first.
