Should i take American Sign Language in high school as my foreign language?

I’m in 8th grade and i am choosing my courses for 9th grade. I hate languages but when i started to learn ASL from some older students, i actually enjoyed it. But, i heard that some colleges don’t accept ASL as a language. Should i just do spanish or french for 3 years (minimum requirements for my school is 3)?

p.s. I don’t no what colleges i want to go to since i am only 14.

  1. i think you should take Spanish or French b/c then you have a much better chance getting accepted to colleges when you’re old enough for that. you could do ASL outside of school. maybe you could make an ASL club where you and other students learn it after school or on weekends. then you’d still be able to do ASL and get your credits for Spanish or French. also, you could put on your high school transcripts that you started an ASL club and were part of it. colleges look for students who do different things and clubs.
Or, if you want to instead: if you have met all your required credits by taking all your required courses and you have some periods left in the day when you’re junior or senior, you could take ASL then. so you’d get extra language credits while doing something you like.

hope i helped. good luck. i enjoy ASL too. but it isn’t offered at my high school.

  2. I would take ASL!!! It isn’t offered at the high school I’m working at now (I’m an ASL interpreter for a high school student) but they are working at getting it as a class. If you take the ASL class and LOVE it you could then get a job in the field with the ASL. Most colleges accept it as a language. Unless you are planning a trip or to live in France or live in a heavy spanish speaking area when will you use the languages. You are more likely to run into someone with a hearing problem.

I know you are only 14 but knowing even the basic signs will help you getting a job. Employers are always looking for people who have the ability to sign in case they have a deaf person.

If you don’t take it in high school most colleges offer the course too. But I would take ASL in high school. Like I said it could open up a huge career choice for you. ASL interpreters make good money.
