A question for anyone who knows Sign Language(ASL)or knows about it?

I’m trying to learn sign language, but it seems like there is more than one way to sign.

Like for example: Know there seems to be more than one sign for that.

I’m trying to learn from http://www.aslpro.com and alot of there signs are different than what I have already learned .

Please help any advise or anything you know would be helpful.
Thanks(:

  1. Firstly, it is best if you learn ASL by attending classes taught by a qualified Deaf teacher. ASLpro is a great site to access signs but does not teach the structure of the language. You are right that there are more than one sign for some English words, ie BIRTHDAY. I think you are referring to LIKE as having more than one sign. One must remember that ASL is not translating from English where an English word has one sign based on what the word is spelling-wise. ASL is based on meaning so if looking at the word LIKE it applies in different contexts: Do you LIKE candy (enjoy), What is LIKE this colour (same as), This LOOKS LIKE my book. You have to leave your English brain aside and move into letting yr brain move from thought-concept into ASL. Do look into a course in your community. You will learn a lot more and probably have more fun!

  2. The other answer was great, but just to add another example…if you looked in an ASL dictionary for the English word “RUN”, you would find MULTIPLE signs:

    I went on a run.
My nose is starting to run.
    That machine doesn’t run.
He plans to run for office.

The list goes on and on…

So yeah, I second what the other poster said. Take a class!
