Yes. Lots of communities offer sign language through adult ed. There are some books out there but make sure they are ASL (if you live in the US). Sign language changes between areas and an area is as small as a neighborhood community. And it is not even close to being the same from country to country. Community Colleges offer it. What is cool is to learn some and then go to deaf events. Some deaf groups of friends meet for coffee or for fun in public. You can observe or even try to interact. My favorite thing to do is help out in my friend’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing classroom. Some of these kids do not have anyone at home to sign to at home. So at school they are so “talkative” and really connect to with the teachers and students. Very cool. Best of Luck…. go for it!
To learn more look for signs on the internet and check out library books. It is great that you can practice with your sister.
I learned the alphabet when I was young and have taught it to my kids. I know very few actual signs though.
The best way to really become fluent is to get real practice. See if there is an organization in your neighborhood where you can meet with others who sign. You can make new friends and really learn to sign well.
I have a hearing impaired student and an interpreter comes to class with him everyday. He is doing great but sometimes I wish that I remembered more so that I could talk to him directly. Anyway, what a great job that could be for you; to go to school and interpret. You get teachers hours without bringing anything home! Only bad part is that you would have to find something else in the summer.
I used to know French sign language. Did you know, even though it’s signed, sign language is different from one country to another? I guess the basics are the same, but they have differences. Anyway, I still know some words, and the alphabet, though.

I leaned quite a bit six years ago, but only remember the alphabet now!
Good luck in learning– it’s nice, but pretty difficult all the same, even if you don’t have to speak like every other language! : )
it’s always good to know and learn many things.
