Anyone taken an American Sign Language proficiency exam?

I’m taking an ASL proficiency exam soon at a university and was wondering what it is like and what types of things are on it. Do you sit with someone and sign with them or are there multiple choice questions where you seen a particular sign and then try to figure out what it is? Any help would be great. Thanks!

  1. I don’t know which test you are taking, but I have taken the Gallaudet University ASLPI (ASL Proficiency Interview).

It’s in conversation format… basically, the person asks you questions and you answer them. They judge your vocabulary, expressive skills, use of classifiers/idioms, comprehension… stuff like that. They typically ask you about your interests and schedule, and they may ask something involving directions or classifiers (describing something, for example), and may ask you to discuss a topic (like global warming or something). But it’s basically just a conversation.

That’s not saying your proficiency exam will be the same format, but that’s how Gallaudet’s current system is set up.
