Are jobs involving sign language in high demand?

I was laid off and unemployed. I am currently going through a divorce, so I need a job that will be decent pay and have benefits. I was thinking of going back to school (through a program for dislocated workers).
I always thought (since I was a kid) that it would be cool to learn sign language. I could watch someone interpret all day (it’s interesting to me)…. Do you think going into any field of work that needs someone who knows sign (interpreter, classroom aide, etc) would be in high demand? I don’t want to go to school for something that wouldn’t get me anywhere.
P.S. I live in the state of WI
Thanks for the info, skittles/m+m lady 🙂

  1. I wouldn’t say high demand, I guess you could make a career from it (whether it be teaching it to others or aiding someone else) but it wont be good pay. Theres probably some money to make out there, but I’m not sure how with sign language..

If you’re interested in languages you could make a lot of money being an interpreter, pick an easy language for an english speaker such as German (perfect because it’s good for business) and you could become fluent in under 600 hours of learning, apparently. Sounds a lot but that’s good to become fluent.

  2. Interpreters are in HUGE demand…even in the state of Michigan were unemployment is the highest in the country!

My school district and several of the surrounding districts are ALWAYS looking for interpreters. Pay is pretty good – $20-24/hour.
