I think everyone should do this with there baby. My sisters did this for their babies and it totally works! I think it is a great for a baby to learn because that way it can help with the frustration of not communicating. They can learn simple signs like “more” or “no” or “yes”
I say get the book “baby signs” and start with your child if you think it is something you want to incorporate into their life.
.
We taught our children sign language too! The only issue we did have was that it delayed their speech. They didnt have to use words because they could already convey what they wanted/needed. So i say to sign and speak. that way the child will get both instead of one. Their speech is just fine (above and beyond their age level) now, but know that in the beginning they may not say as much as you expect them too.
I taught my daughter baby signs and it worked great! The book is good but you can create your own signs without it. Sign language cut down on a lot of frustration.
Good for you !
… but what was the question ?
It can delay speech, but it’s a nice “in the moment” fix to the communication barrier.
My 20 month old daughter is deaf and my 3 year old is autistic (and nonverbal). I didn’t really care for baby signs. I thought some of the signs were pretty stupid. I like to use American Sign Language (ASL) with my kids. The ASL signs make a lot better sense to me than the baby signs.
