Do major schools allow ASL as a foreign language?

I’m going into high school and want to take ASL as my foreign language, but I want to know what, if any, good schools will accept ASL as my foreign language. Anybody know?
I want to know before I send in my high school registration form, so that I can have time to complete all of my foreign language credits before the end of sophmore year.

I’m going to be a Music Major (If that effects anything)
I’m hoping to go to Stetson, or possibly Yale.

  1. Yes, ASL counts as a foreign language. However, many schools don’t teach it so they can’t measure your proficiency in it and since many schools also require you to have a couple foreign language credits before graduating from college, you might have to take a language class in college.

  2. Much like the first person said, ASL does count, but in college often a foreign language is required and I’ve never heard of a placement test for colleges. I would recommend taking ASL at a community college for a few quarters. If you have colleges in mind then see if those ASL classes would transfer and if they count for the foreign language requirement.

    Good luck! ^_^
