I am actually pretty angry that sign language isn’t taught in schools. We learned the sign language alphabet when I was in 3rd grade but that’s all. It was not offered in high school or in my college. Now I have a health care profession and we come across deaf people all the time and the only way we can communicate it by writing so it is stressful on them. Why isn’t sign language offered in schools as a foreign language option? There are so many deaf people in the world it would benefit so many people.

I’m not so sure it should be as a foreign language option, but I definitely agree that it should be taught! But you know it is not too late. You could find a course now. Here a local community college offers it. I’m sure you could find it where you live.
yeah i do!
It actually is in our school, and I’m planning to take it nex year, but I do think it should be considered as a forgein language
It is in some schools.
My high school offers it as a foreign language, if you take it for 2 years.
I live in AZ.
Oh, and it would be American sign language, not sign language. (theres WAY more than one)
I’m sorry that they don’t offer it at your school.
Where do you live, I could understand them not giving it at the high schools, but not at colleges either?
I agree that where I’ve been that it has been offered, it has been of interest to a lot of people, and it would be good to have. It probably would help, although in my experience, a very high percentage of deaf people don’t sign either. However, if a school has a foreign language requirement it is often to increase global involvement (and at times to help students read articles in their field written in other languages), so it doesn’t fit. My best guess is that it depends on the school’s philosophy on why they require a foreign language at all.
What’s worse than schools not teaching it, is teaching it at a poor quality. Many people finish ASL college courses with virtually no experience with the deaf or real time interpreting. In the U.K., it is considered ridiculous for hearing ppl to teach Sig Language, so only deaf ppl are permitted to be instructors.
yes, it is…
in starting but as the time will pass you will become more and more familiar with it. Coz i have already faced this problem.
