you might wanna find someone that knows how to do it already. my friend thought me plenty of stuff and we sometimes use it in class and in regular conversations.
you could get some classes at a college. they’ll teach you way more stuff.
i’m not deaf, but i learned sign language in school.
the best way is definitely take classes. since there is so much ground to cover. get a stack of flash cards of just the alphabet , once you know the alphabet you can spell out anything you want to say, it does take forever to spell out each word but thats the first step.
after knowing the alphabet you can go on to symbols and words, practice with deaf people they are the best teachers. (one of my best friends was deaf )
also try going to your local library, sometimes they have free classes and if not they can definitely send you somewhere that does =]
have a good day
When I was in elementary school, I learned sign language. Classes (barring surrounding yourself with native speakers) are the best way to learn a language quickly.
I learned Spanish from living in the Dominican Republic. The best way to learn a language is to surround yourself with people who speak that language.
After that, take classes somewhere.
Everyone should know at least two languages. How can we stop wars if no-one understands each other?
Look for Deaf social clubs. Many are connected to Deaf schools. You can find them by going to http://www.katrinadisability.info and then clicking on where you live. Surround yourself with people who sign.
Look for a university that teaches sign language for Deaf interpreters. Many places teach sign language classes geared to people who can hear – that are more for self-development and fun than to use as a real language. One of those would be OK to get you started – but you will need more academic classes if you think you are going to become fluent in it. Try these places too: http://clerccenter.gallaudet.edu/infotogo/locating-sign-classes.html
You might also want to take a class in speech reading (lip reading). Most people who are deaf also learn to read what people say as most hearing people do not sign. It is a lot easier to learn when you can hear a little – so if you are losing your hearing- start now. http://infotogo.gallaudet.edu/011.html
Get a Uniphone – and encourage your closest friends/family to get one too. You can talk on the phone, while your friends/family type back to you. They are made by a company called UltraTec. (They also work like a regular phone). http://www.ultratec.com/ttys/uniphones.php
Try a local community agency, like Community Services for the Deaf, who will be able to tell you about community sign language classes orother places you can take classes. Try to find classes that are taught by deaf people. I work at a CSD and we offer classes taught by deaf instructors, we offer mental health services for deaf, interpreting services, and other things.
It is really difficult and not practical to learn from a book or flash cards. Since sign language is a visual language, and books and flash cards are 2 dimensional, you may not be making the signs correctly.
For deaf and dumb you try to talk to them show lip movements and do sign s to recognize what you want to convey then slowly they would grasp you.
get a book about how to sign
If it for adult sign language check tafes or night colleges or deaf centre. Some place offer more then others.
For children check schools.
I have moderate to severe hearing loss as well, feel free to contact me 🙂
I never learned sign language and really regretted it. I learned to read lips and went through 12 years of speech therapy. Although my speech is almost normal and most people can’t even tell that I’m deaf, I still wish I had learned sign language when I was younger.
The sad thing is, everyone’s hearing degrade as they get older, worse for people who already have a hearing loss. You’ll need to learn sign language eventually, sooner is better.
Look for Deaf and Hearing Impaired schools in your area, they have the best resources and will guide you. They can provide free classes or inform you where the classes are in your area.
The absolute best way to learn sign language however, is to practice with someone, and practice a lot! That is why I lost out, I didn’t have anyone to practice with. If you have any friends or family members also willing to learn, the both of you can take classes together and practice afterwards. I guarantee that without someone else you can talk to in sign language, you’ll ever really learn.
