  1. It’s best to take a class, and interact with those who are Deaf and are ASL fluent. If you can’t get into a class, then online (videos) and whatnot are your best bet. It’s best thought to interact, help you become receptive and make sure you are signing correctly.

    You might check:
    http://www.signingsavvy.com
    http://www.aslpro.com

And look into http://www.gallaudet.edu/ for other possible resources. You might also check with your local library to see what else they offer.

  2. I don’t really know any books that will help you, but to me books aren’t the best way to learn sign language since it doesn’t really show you how some of the signs move. But you can probably find books at a local library or bookstore.

If there is a way that you can interact and talk to deaf people, I think that is the best to learn since they know sign language and are normally very friendly towards teaching people some basic sign language. I had two friends in 6th and 7th grade that were deaf and they helped me learn the alphabet and numbers and some words. though you can learn a lot of words by watching other people talk in sign language.

but if you aren’t able to be able to do that, videos online are your best resource i think. you can find stuff on youtube and other sites.
