  2. Just please be sensitive to Deaf culture. It is quite different than Hearing culture, no matter what country you live in. Be sure to ask your teacher/tutor/deaf friends to fill you in. You can easily be offensive without knowing or even by trying to be polite!

Example: In Deaf culture, it is rude NOT to point out to someone that they have gained weight since you last saw them. In American Hearing culture, it is usually perceived as rude to say, “Wow! You’ve gotten fat!”

But in Deaf culture, NOT noticing and acknowledging hurts a person’s feelings. Their sense of sight and observation is much more important to them than it is to Hearing people. Keep all that in mind and good luck!

  3. I am trying to find out where I can send my kids to learn sign language. I am also interested in taking a class to learn sign. My kids are not deaf, but I have met a lot of deaf people in my lifetime and would love to be able to speak with them without having to go through someone else, and I want my kids to be able do the same. I see a lot of packages you can buy on-line, but I want to learn on a personal level with someone experienced in this language.
