How can I study sign language?

im not deaf but I admire sign language so much. Im a beginner and Im really getting into this. Is there a particular website were I can study sign language or take online lessons that are free. I cant go and take classes because in the country I live in there are no classes like that. So only websites please.
And if you do know, how much time will i need to master sign language?

  1. It will definitely be better if you can take an actual class since ASL (I am assuming you live in North America) is a 3 dimensional language so it is hard to learn alone. However, the only good website you will find for free is http://www.lifeprint.com It teaches actual ASL and not just random signs that add up to nothing. Go through the lessons carefully and make sure to actually do the practice sentences because even though they are tedious you find that they help you increase your speed and even though you think you may know a sign when you have to produce it on the spot it becomes a little harder.

  2. What country are you in? Which sign language are you trying to learn, because different countries have their own signed language. British Sign Language, for example, is VERY different from American Sign Language.

If you’re learning ASL, I recommend you buy “Master ASL.” It is a book and video course in sign language that is really well put together. My favorite Web resource is http://www.aslpro.com, a fantastic site that has videos of thousands of signs. If you are dedicated and study it, you should be able to gain a basic knowledge of sign without any classes. To help improve your sign, check out if your area has a Deaf club you can join for events like bowling or pizza night. Interacting with other signers will help a lot. Also check out signed videos on YouTube. There are a lot of really well-done ASL songs and vlogs that can help you better understand the language.

    Good luck!
