  2. Hi, I speak fluent American Sign Language and it took me about 4 months to be really close to fluent, but I took classes, read a dictionary, went to a weekend of workshops, and most importantly talked to tons of deaf people. I also pick up languages quickly, particularly sign languages, so it could take you a lot longer depending how fast you pick things up and how much effort you put into it.

Now, about GSL vs. ASL, any sign language is going to be completely different from any other, everyone thinks oh the hand signals will be similar, and maybe so, but sign is so much more than that, it’s an entire language, it has a grammar, facial expressions, slight movements of the eyebrows and positioning that are going to be totally different once you change languages.

If you choose to learn ASL or GSL is up to you, but remember to speak ASL to americans and GSL to germans because they are NOT the same.

Oh, and most deaf people like to be called deaf not hearing impaired, it’s like you wouldn’t call a short person height impaired, they don’t like to be called impaired, whoever deemed that politically correct didn’t take a poll of deaf people before they did.

    Hope that helps! = ]
