How do I get my child to learn sign language?

I have a baby einstein video, maybe he is still too young 11mosometimes he says milk when he is drinking his bottle is that normal I love sign language, I was gonna go to school to interpret until I had my son, I will go back to school when he gets older anyways it says everywhere it is good for babies to learn sign language, and I already know basic words by teaching my self, so I dont really need the video but how do I get my 11mo son to learn it

  1. I know the signs for Please, thank you , eat , milk, drink, and more and I have taught these signs to my daycare children as young as the age of 9 months and a friend of mine started teaching her son as young as 6 months. It really comes down to repition. You sign it (what ever it is you are trying to teach) every time it is appropriate- like at meal times before feeding the children I would sign eat and ask if they want to eat and repeat the sign and question a couple of times and then I would either give them the food or start feeding them every once in a while I would ask them if they wanted more and I would sign more and so on, sometimes I physically help them to do the sign, eventually when you ask them if they want to eat or drink they will sign back to you. I typically start with Please and more. Good luck be patient it just takes time and children all learn at their own pace.

  2. My twins are 15 months, I started introducing it around 10 months. Now they sign all the time. Repetition is the key. I did the same for my older son. Once they learn to sign, it’s like they’re less fussy because they can communicate. And it can even help them talk earlier because you always say the word with the sign. The most recent sign they’re learning is ‘change’ Every time I change their diaper, I make the sign for change and say the word, now they can tell me when they need a diaper change.

Here is a great site with signing videos and lots of information.

  3. It’s really not that hard to teach children sign language. I suggest using his interests to introduce signs. If his favorite thing to play with is a stuffed bear, show it to him, then sign BEAR and point to the bear. Say, “you do it!” and help him make the sign. Do this with things he wants, and when he makes the sign on his own or with your help, give it to him. He will learn the basics eventually. Some words to start with:
    MORE
    FOOD
    DRINK
    MILK
    COOKIE
    CRACKER
    CHEESE
    WATER
    BALL
    all animal signs
physical signs are obviously easiest as they can see what the sign means.
