i bought an american sign language dvd off amazon. my girlfriend and i are going to watch and practice fairly regularly. how long does it take to get a good grip of it with just a dvd (says it has about 850 signs) and one person to practice with?

Along with the signs, be sure to get finger spelling down pat….that way, if you can’t remember a sign, you can spell it out. How long it takes depends on the person. It really helps to have another person to practice with.
Not too long, I learned when I was a kid though. It took my mom a lot longer. But, I highly recommend the “Bravo Family” movies. They are really good for teaching ASL and actually pretty entertaining too.
