  1. It really depends on how you learn it. A person who learns from a book will take longer than, say, and exchange student.

  2. I took two loonngg years of french starting two years ago and right now I could probably tell you ten french words tops.

  3. It depends on you and how motivated you are. I had French in school for 1 hour a day, 5 days a week for 4 1/2 years but I still suck at it. LOL. But after i graduated, I started trying to brush up on it before college and I learned a lot. When I was forced to learn it, I sucked. But when I tried learning it on my own, I still suck but I’m learning alot more.

    I’m using
    http://french.about.com/
    livemocha.com
and I download French songs and memorize the English translations. That actually helps alot.

  4. It depends on you mainly, I mean how much time will you dedicate exclusively to learn a language, as well the extra input: do you use that new language? How often?

And which skills are you interested to develop:
    writing
    reading
    speaking
    listening

As well, are you gonna learn a new language for business, pleasure or to pass exams….

You can train a lot when you are in the country that the new language is spoken, but it can be a burden at the beginning because most of the information will be senseless unless you have some instruction about it. The hardest skill may be speaking and writing depending on the language because it can make your tongue move completely different as in your own language i.e. French.

The best way to learn a language, first of all you need to know how you learn:

then, after you know this you will find easier to buy, find on internet or else, material to learn a language. Enjoy!

  5. I moved from a non-english country to Canada without any English. After just one year I could speak english. It wasn’t perfect,I made a lot of mistakes, but I could talk with friends almost about everything. After two years,I could speak english perfectly.
When I moved to Canada,I went to high school, and everyday for about an hour,I had ELS classes. For the first year I was the only kid in the ESL class.
What helped me learn so quickly? English only,I had to forget about my native language. I started reading english news, english tv,english friends.

    Hope this helps
