  1. sign language is pretty easy to learn simple you have to be fluent but the jobs are rewarding

  2. To become an interpreter you have to be fluent in both ASL (American Sign Language) and English. Once you have achieved fluency, then you have to learn how to interpret. The process is complicated and does need to be taught to most people. There are college programs set up for interpreting. There are certificate programs, Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s and a PhD program is being set up.

To make decent money as an interpreter, it’s important to become nationally certified. To do this, one must take Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf’s (RID) National Interpreter Certification (NIC) test. Currently, to be able to take the test you have to have an Associate’s degree. In the year 2012, you will need a Bachelor’s degree to take the test. So, if you aren’t in college already and this is a career goal, I’d look for 4 year programs in interpreting.

Also, many states require licensure to work legally as an interpreter, so you’ll want to research to see what the requirements are in your state.

    Hope I helped!
