I’m starting to learn ASL (American Sign Language) and of course, I’ve got questions. Here’s one.?

I learned the sign for “hungry.” Right hand, C shape, move down from chest to stomach. But is that one sign sufficient for “I’m hungry?” By the way, how do you sign “I” or “me”?
Thanks.

  1. Both “I” and “me” are done by either pointing to yourself or by doing the letter “I” in the same spot. Using “hungry” is a proper way of doing saying it. The idea is to get the point across with as few signs as possible. The tutorials I took reduced “Do you have this in black?” down to “Have black (question mark)” It sounds a little caveman-ish at first, but you’ll get used to it.

  2. To sign I, just make the letter “I” and put the end where your thumb is on the middle of your chest. To sign me, just point to yourself.
To say I’m hungry, you can just sign I and then sign hungry.

Or, you could always just say I want food(:

(sign “I” like I stated before, sign want starting with both arms outstretched in front of you with palms up, and then bring them in while closing your palms, still facing up, and sign food by bringing your four fingers down to your thumb (looks kind of like an incline, or one of those hand puppets that kids make when mocking someone.) and put the tips of your fingers up to you mouth.)

  3. Just point to yourself to sign “I” or “Me.” Using the initialized sign (the handshape for the letter I on your chest) is very SEE (Signed Exact English) and is generally not used in ASL.

Also, do not sign the verb “to be,” (including “am” “are” “is”), if you are trying to sign more ASL.

The proper way to sign that in ASL would be, “ME HUNGRY,” “HUNGRY ME,” or “ME HUNGRY ME.” For really simple sentences, all three would be acceptable and mean the same thing.
