In sign language, what does it mean when you point the index finger of one hand into the opposite palm?

My 16-month-old keeps doing this with an earnest face like he’s asking for something, but I have no idea what it is, or where he learned this sign! Poor little guy!

  1. Unfortunately, if it is a sign he’s trying to copy it could be many things. Kids that age don’t sign perfectly, they don’t have the fine motor control required to do some signs, etc. If he’s pointing to his palm, the pointing finger would seem to be the likely one that he is doing incorrectly. “Cookie” is made on the palm of one hand, but not pointing. Ha ha, “owe” is signed that way, but somehow I doubt he’s asking you to repay a debt. 😉

It is possible that he is just copying something he saw and is just attaching an erroneous meaning to it. Especially since you don’t know how he would have learned it!

    Good luck!

  2. the sign you are describing is “owe”. Ex: I own Carl $1.00. I don’t know what your 16-month-old is trying to say..
