Has any one bought the “My baby can talk” DVDs that are on infomercials. I wanted to buy them buy when i was reading the review they were saying it was a great “signing” video so does it teach them sign language? MY baby is 5 months and it would be great to introduce him to something that will help him talk and read sooner but i dont want sign lanuage video. Has anyone bought this how does it work? Is it for sign language?

The videos are “My Baby Can Read” instead of “My Baby Can Talk.” Personally, I do not think those videos actually help since American children learn to read sight words (the common words in the english language) then learn to read phonetically once they have mastered the most common words. The videos do not teach phonemic awareness or anything that the child would need to progress in their education besides learning to memorize words (it’s actually the shape of the word). Learning sign language doesn’t interfer with learning to talk nor does it destine any child to become deaf, if that is your fear. What sign language does is provide a meaningful language for the child so he/she can communicate and learn the function of words faster than he/she learns how to speak.
It is ultimately up to you. You are the parent and she/he is the child. My recommendation is to introduce your child to words by labeling things around the house (kitchen, shoe, car, floor, desk, toys, room, bed, etc.) which will cost you $1 at the Dollar Store for index cards and 60 minutes of your time. Flash the cards in front of your child and demonstrate the words to her (you can point to the car or act like you are driving a car).
