I am slowly going deaf. I am only 38, so I have a while to live with it and want to learn sign language. I can take an ASL class, but I also like to travel. I wondered if there is an international standard, or if ASL is the best option.

I don’t think there is a universal standard.
ASL is as close to an international standard as you will ever get. It’s nearly universal.
Unfortunately not – ideas are expressed differently in different languages, plus homonyms are unique in each language. You can point to your eye and mean “I” in English, but try that in German, where I=ich and eye=Auge!
There are several different sign languages around the world.

The others are correct. There’s the ASL and ISL. The ISL is loosely based on ASL, but if you knew ASL, you more likely would not have a problem with ISL.
It’s much like going from German to English – you can understand quite a few words, but not the whole shebang.
ISL consists of very basic words and is simplified in order to accommodate deaf people from all parts of the world.
Trust me, ASL would be the best option. I’ve been all over the world and have never had a problem despite my profound deafness.
